Making Waves at RH
In 2021, designers at RH (Restoration Hardware) commissioned another creative manufacturing assignment: to create a logo for the wine bar/restaurant in the San Francisco showroom. This was a highly successful project with a beautiful output. Last year, we were tasked with a second wine bar logo, this time for RH’s new and largest showroom at 1101 Newport Beach. This logo required converting their 2D logo art of a wave into a sleek, simple, and easily readable sculptural logo, to match the clean, efficient, and heavy design aesthetic of RH. A flat extrusion would not suffice, as it would not convey a proper feeling of movement to accompany the wave concept.
To make this project a reality, Artifactor3d utilized several different software tools, including Illustrator, Blender, ZBrush, and Magics. It was 3D printed using PolyJet technology with resin. Color-matched paint and black recessed crevasses were applied by hand.
Taking the original mockup and RH Wave logo, Illustrator was used to convert 2D art to paths.
Blender to extrude and add grouped curve modifiers to achieve the flowing effect of the waves.
ZBrush was used for final touches, and Magics was used to properly size and clean up the file for a perfect final printable file.
We manufactured two sizes, allowing RH to determine the best scale onsite. Both final sizes were hand-painted with a color-matched brass/gold. A recessed black paint wash was applied to the cracks to help the recesses appear deep and add visual impact to the gold.
